There are weeks when history feels distant, safely contained in archives and records and then there are weeks like this one, where it reaches out and quietly takes your hand.
I’m tracing a disappeared baby. My great grandfather’s brother married very young. His wife was 16 and lied on their marriage license saying she was 20. Seven months later they had a baby that disappeared. No one in the family today had even heard of her until I found her birth certificate. Her siblings didn’t know about her. I haven’t found a death certificate for her so I’m wondering if she was given up for adoption. I hope she wasn’t a foundling! I assume we will never find out for sure. Her name was Rebecca Lena Charnow.
Oh wow that is a rather unusual story and you have done amazingly well to find her birth certificate. Let me know if you have any further success in finding out what happened yo her Donna, I would love to know her full story if you ever find it!
Do you know where the baby was born? Or where the couple lived? Have you run a newspaper search within a year of the baby’s birth? Sometimes you get lucky and find one clue that leads you to the next one. I hope you’re able to find out what happened to Rebecca.
Another great collection of stories! I subscribed to a few new stacks too! Thanks for including the post about my memory quilt. Always feels like such an honor!
Some great content here, Paul ... In fact, I ended up subscribing to 3 more publications ... Took me a long time to get to the end of your post because I dived into other people's work I hadn't seen before along the way.
I really appreciate you sharing the piece so thoughtfully, and I’m delighted it resonated with you. Your support means a great deal as I begin finding my feet in this space.
