Ask any family historian or writer what is the one story they never tell……….yes you’ve guessed it, their own. If you have read any of my written comments on your wonderful stories over the last few weeks then you will recognise that this is recurring theme. I have mentioned this many times before. We are comfortable telling the stories of our ancestors but far less comfortable telling our own.
After endlessly encouraging my Family History friends to document their own stories—along with those of their ancestors—I figured it was finally time to take my own advice! It actually feels a bit strange, almost like writing my own obituary. But at least by doing it myself, I get to decide what goes in!
I initially wrote this a few years ago but have recently given this a bit of a makeover. You might not know the characters or the places mentioned, but I am hoping that if nothing else that my children and grandchildren will have some idea of what my early years were like. More importantly, have I inspired you to write your own story, if so I would love to hear from you!
You are so right - we spend a lot of time researching and writing about others, leaving ourselves to the dusty corners of history. We should all be "hopping to it." Nice work, Paul!
A great blog. I’m thinking that is you in the school photo, back row, 4th from left in blue shirt!
I’ve been writing my memoirs but not put them ‘out’ there as yet. I must rectify that soon, thanks for the push.
